There is no single person / organization that will benefit from this, only
(in our opinion) all mankind.
Presumptuous, isn't it?
The Problem:
Our world hangs precariously by an extremely thin thread. It is, without
any doubt, an absolute miracle that we have survived until now, with all
the potential and realized disasters that we, as a species, must contend
with.
Every moment, we are at risk of our world coming to an end. Whether by
Why bother?
Quite simply, if we dedicate our time to solving the other problems we
have, like the numbers of poor and starving people, and the proliferation of
landmines, only to get wiped out in any event, then our efforts towards
those things become absolutely meaningless.
We have worked, for thousands of years, on constructing a meaningful
legacy. Each generation has contributed to the definition of mankind.
To throw away all the efforts, all the understanding of the most educated
and advanced species on the planet, would be nothing more than
wastefulness.
We, as a species, have done some terrible things. But, at the same time,
we have done wonderful things, and no person can say that we have done
nothing good, shown nothing worth saving, through the course of our
history.
The Main Idea:
The main idea is extremely simple, and only contains short references to
rocket science.
WE NEED TO GET OFF THE PLANET.
That doesn't mean that we need to go anywhere, and it doesn't mean that
we need to vacate the earth. What is does mean is that we need some way
of preserving our knowledge, and existence, in the event that disaster
strikes. We have learned so much, and done so much - but throughout our
history, we have never once made contingency plans. The way things are at
present, if something terrible did happen, we could lose everything.
EVERYTHING.
And it doesn't have to be that way.
There are many possible solutions, and the details are not that important.
Our vision is simple: it would be entirely practical to build a small
spacecraft, equipped with basic life-support systems (including some kind
of biodome equivalent), and a data haven. All it would have to do is be
able to move out of the way in the case of an asteroid or comet heading
towards the earth (or projectiles fired from the earth).
Its entire function would be to store a small pocket of humanity in case
of emergency.
We have the technology, and we have the resources, to save ourselves. What
we lack is the sense of urgency, and the determination, to do it now.
And the longer we take, the more chance there is of us not finishing in
time.
What YOU can do:
This is not an original idea. There are people working on this already.
But these people are on the fringes of our society. It is human
nature to say "Someone else is taking care of it." But that
attitude is responsible for our tardiness, our inefficiency.
Each and every person can make a difference. All we need is for the world
ending to become an issue.
To be talked about.
To be thought about.
To be understood.
The longer we procrastinate, the more we shrug off the problem
to other people, or our children, the more we are responsible for
our inability to save everything we've worked for.
The more people who consider our future this important, the more people
who are capable will be motivated to do something. And the faster we'll
get to where we're going.
Cases to ponder:
SpaceShipOne, in a fraction of the time that an organization
such as NASA would have, and with a fraction of the budget, produced a
functioning craft according to specification. An impressive feat, and
a demonstration of what can be done by a non-governmental organization.
Firefox managed to raise an enormous amount of capital from
donations - it goes to show that enough belief in something can have a
very real influence.
